Jacob, left, and Zalman were brothers, Zalman the older. They emigrated to the United States together in 1909.
This photograph was made shortly after their arrival. I have
just one memory of Grandpa Jake. I was two years old and he was in his last illness. I was at the door of his room. He
smiled at me. That was 1948.
Their emigrant journey was one between worlds. In my 60th year I set out to see the village my grandfather left nearly
a century ago.
