Reno was second in command under Gen. George Armstrong Custer at the Little Bighorn in June, 1876. Though fighting savaged his battalion, Reno's command escaped Custer's annihilation. Harshly criticized afterward for not aiding his superior, Reno was cleared, but later dishonorably discharged for reasons unrelated to the battle. First buried in a pauper's grave back east, Reno was accorded a posthumous honorable discharge and reinterred at the Custer National Cemetery, Little Bighorn Battlefield, Crow Agency, MT, in 1967.
