Clifford Griffin, an Englishman, managed a mine 11,000 feet high in the Rockies, and that is where his father buried him in 1887. Griffin, said to be despondent over love, fatally shot himself. The monument, located amid century-old abandoned mines, was carted to the grave by wagon from the town of Silver Plume, CO, 1200 feet below. Today the grave is a popular destination for hikers.
