Geronimo and La Zi Yah

I went to the Apache Cemetery at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma to photograph the grave of Apache renegade Geronimo (below), but I found the less imposing stone of La Zi Yah, just a few feet away, poignant and moving in its simplicity. The Apache cemetery guards the remains of tribal members who died during the exile which followed Geronimo's 1886 surrender. Geronimo, whose Apache name was Gokliya, died at Ft. Sill in 1909. Congress allowed the band to return to the southwest in 1913.
